In truth, Derange is little more than a last ditch effort at building a home that will sustain new generations of free-spirited, wild-eyed writers. How these writers choose to proceed with their work is what will define the rest. Our credo is to provide agency, access, and a guiding hand to help crystallize their ideas. Ultimately, we are betting that generation-defining voices will continue to spawn, regardless of what the ever-changing media landscape says.

I understand that the path to success in this decentralized world of content is to corner a niche market. Derange will not be doing this. We aim to publish pieces about anything that writers bring our way. It is my assumption and hope that they will naturally gravitate towards the main arteries of the ruefully absurd world we inhabit. The ambition is that our stories—whether they be about politics, sports, art, travel, or irrigation systems (for example)—will provide an in-depth look into the moment’s psyche with a lasting impact that other mediums are failing to capture.

This is an uphill battle, and admittedly a dumb one from the perspective of any enterprising person. Yet it’s one I’m choosing because writing, editing, and creating stories is perhaps the only thing I care to do.
